Malaysia's Rail Network Enhancement: Sub-Hour KL-Seremban Travel Targeted with New Trains and Infrastructure Upgrades
SEREMBAN, December 2025 — The Malaysian Transport Ministry is aiming to significantly reduce travel times between Kuala Lumpur and Seremban, targeting an express train service that completes the journey in under an hour. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance commuter efficiency and modernize the nation's rail infrastructure.
Achieving this sub-hour travel goal is dependent on two key factors: securing additional train sets and the completion of the Klang Valley Double Tracking (KVDT) upgrade project. The KVDT works, which have led to current extended journey times due to single-line operations on certain sections, are projected to take approximately three more years to finalize. To address current operational limitations and increase capacity, the government has entered into an agreement to lease new trains from China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC).
Once the KVDT infrastructure is fully upgraded and the new rolling stock is integrated, faster and more reliable rail services are anticipated. This improvement is expected to benefit commuters traveling between the capital and Seremban, potentially boosting ridership and offering a more convenient public transport option. Additionally, the upcoming launch of the Kuala Lumpur-Johor Baru Electric Train Service (ETS) on December 12 will provide further, albeit more costly, travel alternatives for the region.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke emphasized his commitment to implementing these faster rail services, noting that while current services are not deteriorating, significant improvements are necessary. This strategic push towards enhanced rail connectivity, coupled with fleet expansion, underscores Malaysia's commitment to developing a more integrated and efficient public transportation network.
