ECRL Achieves Genting Tunnel Breakthrough, Set to Be South-East Asia's Longest Rail Tunnel

The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project in Malaysia has achieved a significant milestone with the successful breakthrough of the 16.39km Genting Tunnel. This tunnel is expected to be the longest railway tunnel in Southeast Asia. The Genting Tunnel, which passes under the Titiwangsa Range, has been recognized in the Malaysia Book of Records as both the country’s longest railway tunnel and the one with the highest overburden.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said this achievement will significantly improve logistics between the east and west coasts of peninsular Malaysia by connecting Kuantan Port and Port Klang. Completing the tunnel excavation marks a major step forward for the ECRL, which is now 84.59% complete as of June 2025 and is on track to begin operations in January 2027.
