Egypt Accelerates Rail Modernization with Velaro High-Speed Train Debut and Desiro Test Run
Egypt, November 2025 — Egypt is making significant strides in modernizing its transportation infrastructure, positioning itself as a leader in Africa and the Middle East. The recent unveiling of the Velaro high-speed train and the successful test run of the Desiro High-Capacity (HC) regional train mark crucial advancements in the nation's ambitious rail development strategy.
Siemens Mobility revealed the Velaro high-speed train to Egyptian officials and the public, a state-of-the-art train designed to operate at speeds of up to 250 km/h (155 mph) and specifically engineered for Egypt's desert climate. Concurrently, the Desiro HC regional train, intended for shorter to medium-distance routes, completed its inaugural test journey near Cairo. This dual progress signifies a comprehensive approach to enhancing national rail capabilities.
These developments are poised to transform passenger travel and economic activity across Egypt. The high-speed rail network, projected to span over 2,000 kilometers across three lines, aims to connect major cities and is expected to eventually serve nearly 90 percent of the population. The Desiro HC will initially operate on a new 660-kilometer route linking Cairo with Alexandria and Ain Sokhna, a corridor vital for regional transport.
"The inaugural ride of the Desiro regional train and the arrival of the Velaro marks a defining moment in Egypt’s transport modernisation strategy," stated Kamel El-Wazir, Egypt's transport minister. Roland Busch, Siemens AG president and CEO, added, "We are witnessing the future of mobility in Egypt take shape." Siemens has also committed to a 15-year maintenance plan for the new fleet, underscoring a long-term partnership.
The introduction of these advanced rail systems is a testament to Egypt's commitment to developing a robust and efficient transportation network. As the country aims to establish one of the world's largest high-speed rail systems, these milestones are critical steps toward achieving greater connectivity and economic integration within the region.
