Gemas-Johor Baru Electrified Double Track Project Nears Completion, Set to Enhance Regional Connectivity

MALAYSIA, November 2025 — The completion of the Gemas–Johor Baru Electrified Double Track Project (EDTP) marks a major milestone in Malaysia’s rail modernisation agenda and is set to significantly strengthen regional connectivity. As one of the country’s most important infrastructure upgrades, the project is poised to reshape travel patterns and stimulate economic activity along the southern corridor.

With physical construction now at 99.94% completion, the RM8.9 billion, 192-kilometre line spanning Segamat, Kluang, Kulai, and Johor Baru is expected to be fully operational by the end of November 2025. In preparation for this milestone, Electric Train Service (ETS) operations have been progressively introduced to allow public access while final works are being completed.

Once fully operational, the EDTP will provide faster, more comfortable, and cost-effective travel options, benefiting daily commuters, students, workers, and businesses. Beyond improved mobility, the project is expected to boost the southern region’s economic growth by driving tourism, attracting new investments, and enhancing logistics efficiency further positioning Johor Baru as a key transport hub.

ETS services were rolled out in stages: first reaching Segamat in March 2025, then Kluang in August 2025, followed by additional weekend services in October. Full ETS operations between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Baru are scheduled to begin in December 2025, offering 12 daily trips across various routes, including services extending to Padang Besar and Butterworth.

The successful delivery of the Gemas Johor Baru EDTP represents a critical step forward in Malaysia’s rail transformation. It aligns with the broader regional movement toward integrated, efficient, and sustainable transport networks that support long-term socioeconomic development.
