Hitachi Rail and Sistem Secure €126.5M Contract for Spain's High-Speed Rail Signalling Upgrade
TALAYUELA, November 2025 – The recent award of a significant signalling and traffic management contract for the Talayuela–Plasencia section of Spain's Madrid–Extremadura High-Speed Line (HSL) underscores the ongoing investment in the nation's rail infrastructure. The €126.5 million agreement positions Hitachi Rail and its partner Sistem, operating as a UTE consortium, to play a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and safety of this vital corridor.
The project scope encompasses the installation of advanced signalling technologies, including interlockings, train protection systems, and fixed telecommunications. A key component will be the implementation of the European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS) Level 2, alongside a Centralised Traffic Control system (CTCS) for real-time operational oversight. The contract also includes a comprehensive 48-month maintenance period following project completion.
This substantial contract reinforces Hitachi Rail's established presence and expertise within Spain's high-speed rail network. It signifies a continued commitment to deploying cutting-edge digital solutions that promote more sustainable and efficient transportation. For Sistem, it represents a key partnership in a major infrastructure development.
Hitachi Rail brings over three decades of experience in the Spanish high-speed rail sector, having previously supplied signalling and telecommunications for more than 2,800 kilometers of track. The company's ETR1000 trains are also a familiar sight on several Spanish high-speed routes, highlighting their deep integration into the country's rail operations.
The award of this contract is a testament to the strategic importance of modernizing rail networks to meet growing demand and sustainability goals, positioning Spain at the forefront of European rail technology deployment.
