Hitachi Rail Secures ₹76 Crore Contract for Bangalore Metro's Automatic Fare Collection System

BANGALORE, November 2025 —The integration of advanced Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) systems is crucial for the efficient operation of modern urban rail networks. In this context, Hitachi Rail GTS India Private Limited has been awarded a significant contract by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), underscoring the growing importance of sophisticated transit technology in India's expanding infrastructure landscape.

The contract, valued at approximately ₹76 Crore, involves the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the AFC system, including the necessary components for fare collection and control. This system will be implemented across Bangalore Metro's Phase 2A and 2B corridors and will also integrate with the existing AFC infrastructure, aiming for seamless passenger experience and operational continuity. The project has a stipulated completion deadline of 441 days.

This development is expected to enhance the operational efficiency and passenger convenience of the Bangalore Metro. A robust AFC system is vital for managing passenger flow, reducing dwell times at stations, and improving revenue collection. The implementation of this new system will contribute to the modernization of Bangalore's public transportation, supporting its growth as a major economic hub.

The selection of Hitachi Rail followed a rigorous bidding process. Technical bids were opened in May 2025, with evaluations concluding in September. Financial bids were subsequently opened, and after a final evaluation in early November 2025, Hitachi Rail GTS India emerged as the lowest bidder, securing the contract.

As India continues to invest heavily in expanding its metro rail network, contracts like this highlight the critical role of technology providers in shaping the future of urban mobility. Hitachi Rail's success in securing this project positions it as a key player in the ongoing modernization of India's public transit systems.
