Hong Kong Adopts Mainland Chinese Standards for Northern Rail Line to Reduce Costs and Expedite Construction
Hong Kong is set to use mainland Chinese standards to construct a cross-border rail project in the Northern Metropolis. Experts suggest this move will capitalize on China's rapidly growing railway sector. By adopting these standards, the project team expects to complete the project two to four years ahead of schedule and reduce costs by 20 to 30 percent.
The switch from the existing United Kingdom and European standards will allow Hong Kong to leverage mainland China's expertise, workforce, and material sourcing. This approach addresses Hong Kong's reputation for high construction costs in Asia. The Northern Link project is considered strategically significant, as it will connect Hong Kong and the mainland, supporting the development of the Northern Metropolis, which is projected to accommodate 2.5 million residents and create approximately 650,000 jobs.
