India Approves ₹2,781 Crore for Key Rail Network Expansion
New Delhi, November 2025 — The Indian government has approved two major rail‑infrastructure projects with a combined budget of ₹2,781 crore, aimed at significantly enhancing railway capacity and connectivity in Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The first project involves doubling the 141 km Okha–Kanalus rail line (Devbhumi Dwarka–Kanalus) a move that will improve access to pilgrimage destinations (notably the Dwarkadhish Temple) and facilitate freight movement such as coal, salt, containers, cement, and other commodities.
The second project will add a 3rd and 4th track along the 32 km Badlapur–Karjat section in the Mumbai metropolitan region, part of the suburban rail corridor a crucial upgrade expected to ease congestion, improve passenger services, and meet growing commuter demand.
Together, these projects will increase the national rail network by about 224 km, enhance connectivity for hundreds of villages, and improve both passenger and freight mobility. Authorities estimate that freight‑handling capacity on these routes could increase by up to 18 million tonnes per annum, strengthening the logistical backbone for regional trade and transit.
These initiatives form part of a strategic infrastructure push under the PM Gati Shakti plan, underscoring India’s commitment to modernizing its rail network, improving multimodal connectivity, and supporting balanced economic development.
