Kerala to Commence Land Acquisition for Sabarimala Rail Project.
The long-delayed Angamali–Sabarimala railway line project has taken a significant step forward, with the Ministry of Railways formally requesting the Kerala government to initiate land acquisition efforts. This move follows recent discussions between the Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and senior officials of the Kerala government, signalling a renewed commitment to the implementation of the strategically important railway line.
According to a report published by The Hindu on July 30, 2025, Minister Vaishnaw confirmed that the state government has been asked to begin land acquisition by agreeing to bear 50% of the total project cost. The 111-kilometre rail corridor, sanctioned initially in the 1997–98 Railway Budget, is expected to improve connectivity to the Sabarimala temple significantly, one of the most prominent pilgrimage sites in South India.
The project will connect Angamali in Ernakulam district to Erumeli in Kottayam district, with Erumeli acting as the gateway for Sabarimala pilgrims. Despite its religious and tourism significance, the project has seen multiple delays over the past two decades due to a combination of challenges, including land acquisition protests, realignment disputes, legal hurdles, and shifting political priorities.
The revised cost estimate for the project now stands at approximately ₹3,801 crore, as per the Kerala Rail Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL) in its latest assessment released in December 2023. KRDCL, a joint venture between the Kerala government and the Ministry of Railways, has been tasked with overseeing the development and execution of the project.
Officials from both the central and state governments have emphasised the importance of signing a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Railways, the Kerala government, and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to formalise cost-sharing and facilitate financial structuring for the project.
The renewed efforts to push the Angamali–Sabarimala rail line forward underscore the broader policy objective of enhancing rail-based access to key pilgrimage and tourism hubs, thereby easing traffic congestion, reducing environmental impact, and promoting regional development.
