Malaysia's Electric Train Service (ETS) Connects Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur Starting December 12

KUALA LUMPUR, November 2025 — Malaysia is set to expand its rail network with the launch of the new Electric Train Service (ETS) connecting Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur. This development marks a major step forward in strengthening inter-city connectivity and is expected to benefit both domestic and international travelers.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the new ETS3 service will begin operations on 12 December 2025, with an official inauguration ceremony on 11 December officiated by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar in Johor Bahru.

In the initial phase, operations will focus on the Johor Bahru–Kuala Lumpur corridor, while longer-distance services to Padang Besar and Butterworth will be introduced in subsequent stages. The southern route will see more frequent train services, while the northern extensions are expected to operate at a reduced frequency of two trips per day.

KTMB will begin with four daily ETS3 services between KL Sentral and JB Sentral. Under the full service plan, the network could expand to 12 daily ETS trips, including eight on the KL–JB route and additional connections to northern destinations.

Travel time between Johor Bahru and Kuala Lumpur is estimated to range between 3.5 to 4.5 hours, depending on the class of service selected, such as Silver, Gold, Platinum, or Express. These options offer different stopping patterns and onboard amenities.

The expansion is supported by the Gemas–Johor Bahru electrified double-tracking project, a major infrastructure investment costing RM8.9 billion, with construction beginning in 2016. KTMB has also procured 10 new ETS train sets, four of which have already completed final inspections and are ready for deployment.

Looking ahead, the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link will further boost regional mobility. Once fully integrated, travelers may be able to journey between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in approximately four hours by combining the RTS Link with the ETS offering a smooth, congestion-free rail alternative to road travel.

The introduction of this expanded ETS network underscores Malaysia’s commitment to modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly public transportation, enhancing travel convenience while supporting broader economic and regional development.
