KUALA LUMPUR, October 2025 — Malaysia is making a significant investment in its logistics infrastructure with a RM370 million multimodal hub in Perlis, strategically positioned near the Thai border. This initiative aims to establish rail as a primary and expedited route for freight moving between China and the ASEAN region, reflecting a broader recalibration of regional supply chains.

The Perlis Inland Port (PIP) is designed to handle a diverse range of long-haul cargo, from rubber to semiconductor chips. With partial commercial operations scheduled to commence in November, the hub's primary objective is to drastically reduce transit times. The goal is to cut the journey between Chongqing, China, and Malaysia from approximately 13 days to under a week, making rail a more competitive option for high-value cargo.

This development signals a strategic push to leverage rail transport as a faster alternative to traditional sea freight for key trade routes. By enhancing its rail capabilities, Malaysia seeks to capture a larger share of regional freight traffic and position itself as a crucial logistics gateway.
