Metro Rail Extension from Motijheel to Kamalapur Nears Completion
**DHAKA, August 2025** — The expansion of Dhaka’s Metro Rail Line-6, particularly the Motijheel-Kamalapur section, is making steady progress with about 60.43% of the construction completed, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). The project reflects the government’s continued investment in urban infrastructure, aiming to ease severe traffic congestion and improve connectivity in one of South Asia’s most densely populated capitals.
The 1.16-kilometer extension from Motijheel to Kamalapur has reached about 60.43% completion, according to Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS). All station columns are now finished, while 298 precast segments have been produced. Of the planned 27 spans, 17 have already been installed, marking a significant construction milestone. Progress is also evident in the concourse roofs, track slabs, platform slabs, and parapet walls, signaling steady advancement toward the project’s next phase.
The extension is expected to greatly improve transportation efficiency once operational, easing traffic congestion in central Dhaka. According to project officials, civil works are targeted for completion by June 2026, after which contractors will focus on installing tracks, electrical systems, and signaling equipment. Full commercial operation is anticipated by mid-2027, marking a crucial step toward building a more integrated and reliable public transportation network in the capital.The MRT Line-6, once fully operational, will span 21.26 km from Uttara to Kamalapur, marking a significant upgrade to the city's transit capabilities. The initial phase, running from Uttara to Motijheel, has been commercially operational since November 2023, demonstrating the tangible benefits of modern rail transit for the city's commuters.
The continued progress on the Motijheel–Kamalapur section highlights Bangladesh’s commitment to modernizing its urban infrastructure. While civil construction is slated for completion by June 2026, the project’s full operational readiness including track, electrical, and signaling systems is expected by mid-2027. Once completed, the extension will offer enhanced connectivity and shorter travel times for Dhaka residents, strengthening the city’s push toward an integrated public transport network.
