Pakistan's Rail Overhaul: Modernization Drive Aims for Regional Connectivity and Economic Growth
PAKISTAN, October 2025 — Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to modernizing its rail network at the Regional Transport Ministers’ International Conference, emphasizing its crucial role in driving trade and fostering regional connectivity.
Pakistan Railways is undergoing a significant transformation focused on digitisation, transparency, and enhanced service efficiency. The ministry is actively pursuing public-private partnership models for both passenger and freight services to improve performance and revenue generation. Key infrastructure projects include the substantial upgrade of the Main Line-I (ML-I), which serves as the network's backbone, and the development of strategic corridors such as the Uzbekistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan Railway Corridor (UAPRC) and the Main Line-III (ML-III) connecting to Iran and Europe.
These extensive upgrades are designed to significantly enhance capacity, safety, and regional integration. The UAPRC, in particular, aims to link Pakistan's seaports with landlocked Central Asian Republics, thereby opening new and vital trade routes. Furthermore, the ML-III upgrade is expected to unlock the mineral export potential from Balochistan, while the planned Main Line-IV (ML-IV) will bolster Gwadar Port's strategic position as a gateway for regional trade.
Minister Abbasi highlighted that modern transport systems are fundamental to economic growth, job creation, and regional cooperation, stating, "Connectivity is the foundation of prosperity." These modernization efforts are also aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and contribute to a broader vision for global transport advancement.
By prioritizing self-sustainability, efficiency, and regional competitiveness, Pakistan Railways is positioning itself as a pivotal element in fostering a connected, developed, and peaceful region. These initiatives are set to leverage the country's infrastructure to support national economic objectives and strengthen international trade partnerships.
