Sarawak Pioneers Solid Hydrogen Transport: Rail, Road, and Sea PoC Set to Transform Asian Logistics

KUCHING, October 2025 — Sarawak is set to embark on a pioneering Proof-of-Concept (PoC) shipment trial for clean hydrogen in solid form, marking a major milestone for regional logistics and the emerging clean energy sector across Asia. The initiative, led by SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd (SEDCE) in collaboration with global hydrogen technology provider Hydrexia, will test the multimodal transport of hydrogen by road, rail, and sea — establishing new pathways for clean energy distribution.

The trial will utilize Hydrexia’s MHX container technology, which allows hydrogen to be transported safely in a solidified state at ambient pressure and temperature while maintaining high purity standards. The planned route will begin in Kuching, pass through Port Klang, continue to Singapore and Hong Kong, and return to Kuching. This comprehensive journey aims to evaluate the technology’s readiness and safety protocols across diverse logistical environments.

For the rail sector, this initiative represents a potential breakthrough in cargo innovation, paving the way for the safe and efficient movement of clean energy commodities. A successful trial could enable greater integration of hydrogen into regional rail freight systems, boosting supply chain resilience and supporting Asia’s decarbonization goals.

The MHX container system employs magnesium-based solid-state storage within a standardized 20-foot unit, offering high energy density and logistical flexibility. Hydrogen molecules are absorbed into the MHX unit through hydrogenation and later released via dehydrogenation at the destination. This method, ideal for small to medium volumes, enhances safety, cost efficiency, and risk management in early-stage hydrogen export operations.

This groundbreaking PoC highlights Sarawak’s commitment to building a complete hydrogen value chain from production to export. By validating both technology and cross-border logistics, the initiative aims to instill confidence among offtakers and industry partners, positioning Sarawak as a trusted regional hydrogen supplier and advancing Malaysia’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions.
