Sikkim Rail Link Project Faces Scrutiny After Landslide Incident
**SIKKIM, August 2025** — A landslide at Rabijhora has damaged a protective wall near Tunnel 7 of the under-construction Sevoke–Rangpo railway link, reigniting concerns about the stability of the ₹12,500 crore project. The collapse, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, occurred about 30 meters from the tunnel portal, but officials confirmed there were no casualties and that the main and adit tunnels remain structurally sound.
The incident has prompted renewed calls for a comprehensive scientific review of the project, which aims to connect Rangpo in Sikkim with Sevoke in West Bengal through a 45 km line featuring 14 tunnels and several bridges. Geologists and activists warn that the fragile Himalayan terrain marked by unstable slopes, complex rock formations, and recurring landslides poses long-term risks to infrastructure projects in the region.
Work on the railway has already seen significant progress, with 10 of the 14 tunnels completed. However, recurring slope failures and environmental challenges underscore the need for stronger safeguards before further expansion. The incident highlights the delicate balance between critical connectivity goals and the vulnerability of mountain ecosystems.
