Xi'an-Yan'an High-Speed Railway Begins Operation Tests, Set to Slash Travel Times
BEIJING, SEPTEMBER 2025 — The Xi’an–Yan’an high-speed railway has entered its operation testing phase, marking a major milestone in the expansion of China’s high-speed rail network and strengthening connectivity within Shaanxi province.
The new line stretches 299.8 kilometers and is designed for speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour. Once in full service, it will cut travel time between Xi’an and Yan’an from about 2.5 hours to just one hour, opening new opportunities for regional economic development, tourism, and inter-city cooperation.
Operation tests officially began on September 11, 2025, with the departure of test train DJ502 from Xi’an North Railway Station. This stage focuses on validating the line’s safety, reliability, and overall performance before commercial services commence.
As one of the latest additions to China’s rapidly growing high-speed rail network, the Xi’an–Yan’an line demonstrates the country’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its transport infrastructure. It is expected to play a vital role in promoting balanced growth across Shaanxi, while also reinforcing China’s national transportation strategy.
