India, October 2026 – India's railway investment programme for the 2026–27 financial year is expected to create potential export opportunities for Thai businesses seeking to enter the country's expanding railway supply chain. According to a report by the Thai Trade Center in Mumbai, demand could emerge across railway construction, electrical systems, infrastructure materials, safety equipment and maintenance technologies.
The investment allocation amounts to approximately 2.93 trillion rupees (US$30.92 billion) and covers railway development across the wider Indian network. As of April 2026, India had approved 514 railway development projects covering approximately 40,000 kilometres. However, opportunities for Thai suppliers within the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project remain limited due to procurement conditions attached to Japanese government financing, while several major contracts have already been awarded.
Despite these restrictions, Thailand has an established export base that could support its participation in India's railway supply chain. In 2025, Thai exports of electrical machinery and equipment to India reached approximately US$1.43 billion, representing a 7.9% year-on-year increase. Exports of insulated electrical wires and cables amounted to US$29.8 million, up 13.3% from the previous year. These products could provide an entry point for Thai manufacturers seeking opportunities with Indian railway contractors and infrastructure suppliers.
Meanwhile, the Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project has achieved 62.16% overall physical progress. The 508-kilometre corridor has recorded more than 366 kilometres of viaduct girder installation, while track slabs have been installed across 97 kilometres. Construction also includes a 21-kilometre tunnel section, incorporating a seven-kilometre undersea stretch. All 14 portal beams supporting the elevated railway in Vadodara have been completed, marking further progress on India's first high-speed rail corridor.
Thailand's Commerce Ministry has indicated its readiness to support business matching between Thai suppliers and Indian contractors, alongside assistance with registration and certification through India's Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO). However, prospective exporters will need to assess procurement eligibility, technical specifications, import duties and logistics costs before entering the market. The development highlights how India's railway expansion could strengthen regional infrastructure supply chains while creating opportunities for Southeast Asian manufacturers to participate in major transport investment programmes.
