As countries expand railway investment, attention is shifting from infrastructure delivery to manufacturing excellence and technology leadership. Industry leaders in India are calling for the country to establish global rail standards as it strengthens its position in the international railway supply chain.

New Delhi, June 2026 — Sudipta Mukherjee, Managing Director of Texmaco Rail & Engineering Limited, has urged India's railway industry to move beyond serving domestic demand and focus on becoming a global benchmark for rail manufacturing. Speaking at the 5th ETInfra Rail Show, he said the country's next phase of growth should be driven by innovation, quality and internationally recognised standards rather than production scale alone.

Mukherjee highlighted that India's ongoing railway transformation extends beyond network expansion to the development of an integrated manufacturing ecosystem. He credited initiatives such as Make in India, Atmanirbhar Bharat and sustained infrastructure investment for accelerating modernisation across freight corridors, station redevelopment, urban rail, digital technologies, safety systems and operational efficiency. According to him, these investments provide a strong foundation for building globally competitive railway capabilities.

He also emphasised that the next stage of industrial development should prioritise designing, engineering and manufacturing railway technologies within India for international markets. Rather than focusing solely on compliance, manufacturers should strengthen product reliability, supply chain resilience and customer trust to compete globally. Mukherjee argued that these qualities would enable India to evolve from a manufacturing hub into a provider of integrated mobility solutions.

The remarks reflect broader ambitions within India's rail sector to expand exports of rolling stock, railway systems and engineering expertise as domestic investment continues to grow. Greater collaboration between industry, government and technology partners is expected to play a key role in supporting innovation, improving competitiveness and positioning Indian manufacturers within global railway supply chains.

As rail markets increasingly seek advanced, reliable and sustainable transport solutions, establishing internationally recognised manufacturing standards is likely to become a defining factor in India's efforts to strengthen its global presence in the railway industry.
