Rail freight innovation is advancing to meet the increasing demands of oversized and high-mass transport across European rail networks. Swedish specialist manufacturer Kiruna Wagon has secured a contract to build a bespoke 32-axle, heavy-duty freight wagon for local transport operator Kraftdragarna, designed to support complex infrastructure and energy sector logistics. The project reflects growing requirements for tailor-made rolling stock solutions that can safely move very large components over standard rail infrastructure.

SWEDEN, April 2026 — Kiruna Wagon has signed an agreement with Kraftdragarna, based in Västerås, for the manufacture and delivery of a specially adapted heavy-duty freight wagon capable of carrying up to 490 tonnes of oversized cargo on the Swedish rail network.

The articulated wagon features 32 axles (16 bogies) and measures around 74 metres in length, engineered to negotiate curves and operate within Sweden’s rail loading gauge. It is tailored for transporting extremely heavy items such as power transformers and critical energy-sector equipment, expanding Kraftdragarna’s capacity for specialised logistics.

Kiruna Wagon’s design draws on its experience in heavy-haul transport solutions, with optimisation focused on load distribution, structural dynamics, and integration with existing infrastructure to ensure operational reliability and safety. The bespoke nature of the wagon underscores the technical challenges of handling exceptional loads on conventional tracks.

Delivery of the wagon is scheduled for August 2028, aligning with customer logistic planning for major infrastructure projects requiring movement of oversized components. Such tailored freight solutions are becoming essential as railways support large-scale industrial and energy developments across Europe.

This development highlights broader industry trends toward specialised rolling stock that enables rail to compete in heavy logistics markets traditionally dominated by road transport, reinforcing rail’s role in supporting infrastructure delivery and energy transition supply chains.
