Bangladesh, October 2026 – Indian infrastructure company Larsen & Toubro has secured two major contracts for the Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project, covering key systems for Metro Line 1. The awards comprise Contract Package CP09 for track works and electrical systems, and CP10 for signalling, telecommunications and platform screen doors.
Under CP09, L&T will work alongside Japanese partner Sumitomo Corporation to design, procure, install, test and commission the track infrastructure and associated electrical facilities. The scope includes power supply and distribution systems, traction substations, overhead catenary systems and related equipment. CP10 covers the signalling, telecommunications and platform screen door systems across the entire network.
The contracts build on L&T's previous involvement in Bangladesh's railway sector. The company delivered the integrated railway systems package for Dhaka Metro Line 6, the country's first metro corridor, which is already in commercial operation. The latest awards extend its role in the country's urban rail development and add to its international metro infrastructure portfolio.
Dhaka Metro Line 1 is planned as an approximately 31km network comprising an underground Airport Route connecting Kamalapur with Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, and an elevated Purbachal Route running from Natun Bazar to Purbachal Terminal. The project will include 19 stations and a depot at Pitalganj. It is funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The contracts form part of a wider programme to expand Dhaka's metro network, with construction packages for Lines 1 and 5 awarded to companies from Japan, China, India and Bangladesh. The integration of track, power, signalling and passenger safety systems will be central to Line 1's development, as the city seeks to strengthen public transport capacity and improve connectivity between major urban destinations.
