IPOH, April 2026 — Malaysia's national strategy to enhance its logistics infrastructure increasingly prioritizes shifting freight from road to rail. This initiative aims to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and alleviate road congestion.
Tasek Cement has inaugurated a new rail freight service connecting Ipoh and Johor Bahru, commencing operations on March 30, 2026. The inaugural shipment utilized 31 wagons, carrying 840 tonnes of cement destined for distribution within the Johor Bahru region. The service operates via KTM Berhad's cargo network.
This new service is projected to replace a significant number of heavy trucks daily, with each train run substituting at least 31 vehicles. This directly supports Malaysia's "Road to Rail" policy, aiming to increase the modal share of rail in domestic freight transport.
The introduction of this dedicated cement freight service by Tasek Cement signifies a concrete step towards modernizing Malaysia's freight logistics. It aligns with broader industry trends towards intermodal solutions and sustainable transport, contributing to a more integrated and efficient national supply chain.
