AUSTRIA, March 2026 — The launch of WESTbahn's services on the Vienna–Graz–Klagenfurt–Villach corridor marks a significant expansion for the private operator and introduces direct competition to the long-dominated state-owned ÖBB. This strategic move capitalizes on the recent opening of the Koralmbahn high-speed section.
Operating since March 1, 2026, WESTbahn is deploying new Stadler SMILE trainsets capable of 250 km/h, described as Austria's fastest trains. Initially, three daily return services are running, with plans to increase to five by late May.
This new competition is expected to drive improvements in service quality and reliability on a key national route. WESTbahn aims to address perceived quality deficits and offer a high-standard rail travel experience, positioning its Vienna–Villach journey as comparable to ÖBB's Railjet services.
The investment includes three new 11-car Stadler SMILE trainsets, representing approximately €120 million. These modern trains feature enhanced onboard amenities such as leather seating, Wi-Fi, and step-free access, differing from WESTbahn's previous fleet on the Western Line.
This development signifies a structural shift in Austria's long-distance rail market, testing the maturity of the open-access regime and signaling increased passenger choice and potential for innovation in rail transport.
