South Korea, September 2026 — Woojin Industrial Systems has signed a contract with Seoul Metro to supply 376 metro cars, strengthening its position in South Korea’s urban rail rolling-stock market. The contract was confirmed by the manufacturer during InnoTrans 2026 in Berlin.
The order is valued at 593.4 billion won and was awarded to Woojin as the sole bidder. The contract, signed in August, covers the production and supply of the new metro cars for Seoul Metro, supporting the renewal and expansion of the operator’s rolling-stock fleet.
Alongside the Seoul order, Woojin has been shortlisted for a tender to supply light rail vehicles for a project in Los Angeles. The opportunity extends the company’s international activities into the US market and places its rolling-stock technology alongside other suppliers competing for major urban rail programmes.
Woojin’s simultaneous involvement in major Asian and North American opportunities illustrates the increasingly international nature of the urban rail rolling-stock market. For manufacturers, established domestic orders can provide a platform for pursuing overseas contracts, while transport authorities continue to assess suppliers against requirements covering capacity, technology, reliability and lifecycle support.
The developments also highlight continued investment in metro and light rail fleets as cities modernise existing systems and develop new urban transport capacity. For the wider rail supply chain, rolling-stock programmes create opportunities extending beyond vehicle manufacturing into maintenance, systems integration and long-term technical support.
