Iran Enhances National Rail Infrastructure and Fleet with 283 New Units

TEHRAN, October 2025 — Iran has significantly bolstered its national railway capabilities through the inauguration of 17 new rail-infrastructure projects and the addition of 283 domestically manufactured and rebuilt rolling-stock units. This strategic expansion underscores the country’s commitment to modernising its transportation network and enhancing capacity for both freight and passenger services.

The newly integrated rolling stock comprises 224 freight wagons, 14 new and rebuilt locomotives, and 45 passenger coaches all produced or refurbished within Iran. These additions, valued at approximately 90 trillion rials (about US$180 million), represent a substantial investment in the nation’s rail sector. Key infrastructure projects accompanying this fleet expansion include the construction of 50 km of double track on the Bafq–Zarrin Shahr line, rehabilitation of track and signalling systems in several locations, and development of a spur line for industrial use.

The ceremony, attended by President Masoud Pezeshkian and Transport Minister Farzaneh Sadegh, was part of a broader set of inaugurations by the Ministry of Transport. This comprehensive approach to infrastructure development signals a concerted effort to upgrade national connectivity and support economic growth through improved transportation links.

This initiative is poised to improve the efficiency and reach of Iran’s rail network: facilitating smoother logistics for goods, enhancing travel experiences for passengers, and emphasising domestically manufactured units to drive self-sufficiency and develop Iran’s industrial base in rail-manufacturing.

By focusing on both new construction and modernisation of existing rolling stock and infrastructure, Iran is positioning its railway system to better serve its economic and social needs contributing to a more robust and integrated national transportation framework.
