Critical Rail Infrastructure in Southern Thailand Damaged by Floods, Affecting 10 Train Services
PHATTHALUNG & SONGKHLA PROVINCES, December 2025 — Severe flooding in southern Thailand has caused significant damage to critical rail infrastructure, leading to widespread service disruptions on the State Railway of Thailand's (SRT) southern line. The extreme weather event has necessitated immediate action to ensure passenger safety and assess the extent of the damage.
The flooding, particularly in Phatthalung and Songkhla provinces, resulted in tracks being washed away, ballast stones displaced, embankments cut, and rail fasteners broken. Key affected sections include the route between Ban Ton Don – Hat Yai Junction and Hat Yai Junction – Su-ngai Kolok. Consequently, SRT has suspended four train services and rerouted six others, with these measures expected to remain in effect until December 6, 2025.
This disruption directly impacts thousands of passengers, with the SRT offering full refunds for affected tickets. The damage underscores the vulnerability of essential transport networks to increasingly severe weather patterns and highlights the immediate need for robust repair and maintenance operations to restore connectivity.
SRT civil engineering teams are actively inspecting the damaged tracks and commencing urgent repairs. Passengers are advised to verify train status through official channels before traveling. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges in maintaining rail network resilience against environmental factors, emphasizing the importance of adaptive infrastructure planning in the region.
