Dhaka Metro Rail Services Briefly Interrupted by External Obstruction

DHAKA, December 2025 — Bangladesh's pioneering metro rail system, a crucial component of Dhaka's urban transportation modernization, experienced a brief service interruption recently. The Uttara-Motijheel line, the nation's first metro, faced a temporary halt due to an external factor impacting its operational integrity.

The incident occurred when a piece of cloth fell onto the overhead power line, disrupting the flow of electricity and causing services to be suspended for a short period. The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), the implementing agency for the metro rail project, managed the situation to minimize disruption. The 20.1-kilometer line, which began operations on the Uttara-Agargaon section in December 2022 and was later extended to Motijheel, is currently undergoing further expansion towards Kamalapur.

While the disruption was brief and did not result in significant delays, it underscores the operational challenges inherent in maintaining a new and expanding urban rail network. Ensuring the continuous reliability and safety of the metro system requires constant vigilance and robust protocols to prevent even minor external interferences from affecting passenger services.

As Dhaka continues to develop its integrated public transport infrastructure, such incidents serve as a reminder of the ongoing efforts needed to safeguard the operational efficiency of its metro lines. The successful expansion and consistent performance of the metro are vital for improving urban mobility and supporting the city's economic growth.
