DERBY, April 2026 — East Midlands Railway (EMR) welcomed students to its facilities as part of an outreach initiative designed to introduce young people to career opportunities within the rail industry. The programme provided participants with direct exposure to operational and customer-facing aspects of railway work, alongside insights into technical and engineering roles.
During the visit, students experienced a driver training simulator, gaining a practical understanding of train operations, signalling principles, and safety procedures. They also took part in ticketing sessions, where they learned about different fare types, including advance and season tickets, and how digital ticketing systems are used in modern rail retail environments.
The initiative also included engagement with EMR staff from multiple departments such as marketing, fleet engineering, driver operations, community rail, and apprenticeships. This cross-functional exposure was designed to highlight the breadth of roles available in the rail sector beyond frontline train operations.
Rail operators across the UK are increasingly prioritising early engagement with schools and colleges as part of broader workforce development strategies. With ageing workforces and growing demand for engineering and digital skills, such programmes aim to build awareness of rail careers at an earlier stage and encourage entry into apprenticeships and technical pathways.
More broadly, initiatives like this align with wider UK rail industry efforts to strengthen long-term talent pipelines across signalling, rolling stock engineering, operations, and customer service. As the sector continues to modernise, attracting digitally skilled and technically trained workers is becoming a critical factor in supporting future network reliability and expansion.
