Malaysia, October 2026 – YTL Construction has received three industry recognitions, including two awards at the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2026 organised by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia. The Gemas–Johor Bahru Electrified Double Track Project, undertaken by the SIPP-YTL joint venture, received the Best Project Award in the Infrastructure – Major Category, while YTL Construction executive director Yeoh Keong Yuan received the Outstanding Young Contractor Award.
The awards follow the company's recognition as Construction Company of the Year (Transport Infrastructure) at the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) Malaysia Building Excellence Awards 2026. Together, the achievements highlight the company's involvement in major transport infrastructure development and the delivery of complex railway construction works in Malaysia.
The Gemas–Johor Bahru project spans 192km and comprises 11 stations. Its completion provides the final link in Malaysia's electrified double-track railway network between Padang Besar and Johor Bahru, enabling Electric Train Service (ETS) journeys between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru in approximately four hours and 20 minutes.
Construction involved civil and structural engineering, track installation and railway systems works, carried out alongside an operational railway while maintaining existing passenger and freight services. YTL Construction reported that the project recorded 28 million safe working hours and incorporated Building Information Modelling (BIM), drones and LiDAR technology to support construction planning and execution.
The project also involved more than 3,000 Malaysian engineers and technical specialists, supported over 35,000 employment opportunities throughout construction and reached a peak workforce of nearly 10,000. Its completion strengthens rail connectivity across Peninsular Malaysia and demonstrates the contribution of local engineering and construction capabilities to large-scale transport infrastructure projects.
