Vietnam, October 2026 – VinSpeed High-Speed Railway Investment and Development JSC and its consortium of main contractors launched an expanded construction programme on 30 October for the Ben Thanh–Can Gio high-speed railway. Work is progressing simultaneously across several sections, including Ben Thanh underground station, the Saigon Port tunnel area, the Rach Dia and Ong Doi bridges, and approach structures leading to the main Can Gio Bridge. Up to 10,000 workers, engineers and technical specialists are expected to be mobilised during peak construction periods.
The project has completed several preparatory activities since its groundbreaking in December 2025, including geological surveys, access road construction and bored pile foundations at the Can Gio depot and major bridge locations. Contractors have also established three precast girder production yards, where the first trial concrete bridge girder has been successfully cast. Approximately 1,300 prestressed concrete box girders are scheduled to be manufactured over 15 months, with each facility expected to produce one to two spans daily.
Several major engineering structures will form part of the railway. The underground Ben Thanh Station will extend more than 565 metres, with an excavation depth of approximately 34 metres, and connect directly with the existing Ben Thanh Station on Metro Line 1. A tunnel exceeding 2km beneath the Saigon Port area will be constructed using a tunnel boring machine with a diameter of 13 metres.
Another significant component is the main Can Gio Bridge, which will cross the Soai Rap River using a cable-stayed steel truss design. The bridge will feature two A-shaped pylons, a 360-metre main span and approximately 4.4km of approach viaducts. To accelerate construction, the project is increasing the use of prefabricated components, supported by specialised equipment capable of transporting and installing bridge girders weighing up to 900 tonnes.
The approximately 54km railway is designed for speeds of up to 350km/h and is expected to reduce travel time between central Ho Chi Minh City and Can Gio to around 13 minutes. Land clearance is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2026, followed by construction completion and trial operations in the fourth quarter of 2028. Commercial services are targeted to begin in 2029, with the railway expected to improve access to the city's southern coastal area and support its tourism and marine economy.
