As India advances its high-speed rail ambitions, the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor is set to adopt a pricing strategy competitive with existing air and rail travel. This move aims to attract a wider passenger base and bolster the project's long-term viability.

NEW DELHI, February 2026 — India's ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR) project is progressing, with a focus on making its operational fares competitive with current air and rail travel options. This strategic pricing is intended to ensure broad accessibility and encourage adoption among travelers.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated in Lok Sabha on February 11, 2026, that ticket prices are proposed to be competitive with existing rail and air travel. This announcement came in response to parliamentary questions regarding the project's progress, timeline, passenger capacity, and financial viability.

The 508-kilometer MAHSR corridor, designed with technical and financial assistance from Japan, is customized for Indian requirements and climatic conditions. It will feature 12 stations connecting major cities and towns across Gujarat, Maharashtra, and the Union Territory of Dadra & Nagar Haveli.

The project's long-term financial viability has been assessed based on projected passenger demand, economic benefits, time savings, and regional development. The completion timeline is contingent upon the finalization of all associated works, including civil structures, track laying, electrical systems, signaling, telecommunications, and trainset delivery.

This approach to pricing and development underscores India's commitment to enhancing its high-speed rail network, aiming to revolutionize intercity travel and foster economic integration across key regions.
