KUCHING, May 2026 — Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg has confirmed that the proposed Bintulu–Samalaju railway corridor will be prioritised as the initial phase of the state's rail development programme. The project forms part of broader discussions surrounding the proposed Trans-Borneo Railway network, which could eventually enhance connectivity between Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei.
The rail link is intended to support freight movements between Bintulu Port, Kidurong and the Samalaju Industrial Park, one of Sarawak's key low-carbon industrial clusters. State leaders view the corridor as a strategic logistics route capable of reducing pressure on existing road infrastructure while improving cargo transport efficiency for heavy industrial activities.
According to the Premier, the project remains subject to ongoing alignment and feasibility studies being undertaken by Malaysia's Economic Planning Unit. Once the preferred alignment is identified, construction of the Bintulu–Samalaju section could proceed, with implementation expected to occur in stages due to the significant capital requirements associated with rail infrastructure projects.
While rail expansion towards Miri, Kuching or other parts of southern Sarawak has been discussed, no formal decision has been made. Future extensions will depend on the outcome of the national rail alignment study, funding arrangements, and broader federal-state coordination on the Trans-Borneo Railway initiative. Previous discussions have also explored potential integration with future rail links extending towards Kalimantan, Indonesia.
The announcement reflects a pragmatic approach to rail development in Sarawak, with authorities focusing first on high-demand industrial corridors before considering a wider regional network. If implemented, the Bintulu–Samalaju railway could serve as a foundation for future rail expansion across Borneo while supporting the state's long-term industrial and logistics ambitions.
