Assam CM Secures Railway Minister's Consent for Key Rail Projects, Including Bhutan Link and New Amrit Bharat Trains
NEW DELHI, November 2025 — Enhanced rail connectivity is a critical driver for economic development and regional integration in Northeast India. A recent high‑level meeting between Assam’s Chief Minister and the Union Railway Minister focused on several key railway infrastructure projects aimed at improving both domestic and cross‑border connectivity.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to discuss expediting the proposed railway line connecting Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan. During the meeting, Sarma also put forth requests for the introduction of three new Amrit Bharat trains serving Assam, the establishment of a new rail route from Umrangso to Lanka, and an increase in stoppages for major trains passing through the state.
These proposed developments are expected to significantly bolster regional connectivity, facilitating smoother movement of goods and passengers. The new rail line to Bhutan, in particular, is anticipated to enhance trade and tourism between the two nations. The introduction of additional Amrit Bharat trains and route extensions aims to improve passenger convenience and stimulate economic activity across Assam and the wider Northeast region.
The Union Railway Minister reportedly gave his consent to these proposals, assuring that the Railway Ministry would implement the suggested measures. This positive response underscores a commitment to advancing railway infrastructure in the region, aligning with broader goals of economic growth and improved accessibility. The proactive engagement highlights the strategic importance of rail development for connecting remote areas and fostering stronger ties with neighboring countries.
