China Expands High-Speed Rail Network to 12 Provinces with New Line Openings
BEIJING, SEPTEMBER 2025 — China is significantly expanding its high-speed rail (HSR) network, a cornerstone of its national infrastructure development. The upcoming opening of key new lines will further improve coverage in several provinces, advancing toward broader access in more regions.
One new line is the Panzhou–Xingyi high-speed railway in Guizhou Province, whose track-laying was completed in July 2025. This 98-kilometer line is expected to open by the end of 2025, enabling direct connections from Guiyang to Xingyi in about two hours.
Another is the Shenyang-Changbaishan section of the Shenyang-Jiamusi HSR, which entered simulated passenger trial operations on September 4, 2025. It runs approximately 430 kilometers, passes through multiple cities (including Fushun, Tonghua, Yanbian), and is designed for speeds up to 350 km/h.
These additions are part of China’s shift from building just the primary backbone high-speed lines to creating a more dense, interconnected network across provinces. For example, Guangxi has recently achieved high-speed rail service in every city in its region.
Overall, these developments reinforce China’s commitment to improving regional connectivity, supporting economic integration, and enhancing access to fast and efficient rail travel across more of the country.
