China-Laos Railway Achieves Milestone Freight Volume, Enhancing Regional Connectivity
YUNNAN, China, September 2025 — The China-Laos Railway continues to reinforce its role as a vital artery in Asia’s logistics network, recording sustained growth in freight operations and cross-border trade. The 1,035-kilometre corridor serves as a crucial connection between China and Southeast Asia, driving regional economic integration and supporting the expansion of supply chains across the continent.

As of September 19, 2025, the railway has transported more than 67.6 million tons of cargo, with over 15 million tons attributed to cross-border shipments. Since its launch in December 2021, more than 60,000 freight trains have operated along the route, marking a significant milestone in the Belt and Road Initiative’s broader goal of improving interregional connectivity.

The line has proven instrumental in facilitating efficient and cost-effective logistics between China’s Yunnan Province and Laos, enabling faster trade flows and reducing transportation costs. Its growing freight volumes reflect increasing demand from industries reliant on stable and high-capacity rail services, particularly in manufacturing, agriculture, and energy sectors.

Beyond economic benefits, the railway exemplifies the strategic role of modern rail infrastructure in supporting sustainable trade and deepening cooperation within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). By enhancing transport efficiency and connectivity, it continues to lay the groundwork for long-term regional development.
With freight volumes rising steadily, the China-Laos Railway stands as a benchmark for future transnational rail projects in Asia a model of how cross-border collaboration can advance both economic growth and logistical resilience.
