China Launches 250 km/h High-Speed Rail Link to Vietnam Border, Slashing Travel Times and Boosting Regional Connectivity
BEIJING, December 2025 — China has inaugurated a significant new high-speed rail line connecting its Guangxi region to the border with Vietnam, marking a substantial advancement in regional transportation infrastructure and cross-border connectivity. This development is poised to transform travel and trade dynamics between China and Southeast Asia.
The newly operational 81-kilometer line runs between Pingxiang and Chongzuo, integrating seamlessly with the existing corridor to Nanning, the provincial capital. Designed for a top operational speed of 250 kilometers per hour, the route dramatically reduces the journey time between Nanning and Pingxiang from over four hours to just 1 hour and 15 minutes. The line will initially operate four pairs of high-speed trains daily, with plans for a flexible, market-based pricing model for passengers.
This infrastructure upgrade is expected to significantly boost tourism and trade, reinforcing Guangxi's strategic position as a gateway to Southeast Asia. The faster and more reliable connection is anticipated to stimulate economic activity in border cities like Pingxiang, facilitating logistics, business travel, and new commercial opportunities. It also supports broader regional economic integration initiatives, such as the RCEP.
Beyond speed, the new line offers an enhanced passenger experience with modern amenities and smoother rides. Engineered to withstand challenging terrain and weather conditions, it represents a key component of China's strategy to upgrade its long-distance transportation networks in border regions. This project underscores the growing importance of rail infrastructure in fostering closer economic and cultural ties between China and its Southeast Asian neighbors.
