China's Rail Freight Volume Surges 3.4% in First Nine Months of 2025, Reaching 3.03 Billion Tonnes

BEIJING, October 2025 — China’s extensive rail network plays a crucial role in its economic engine, facilitating the movement of goods across the vast nation and supporting its position as a global manufacturing hub. Recent data highlights the continued strength and importance of this infrastructure.

According to figures released by the national railway operator, China’s railways transported approximately 3.03 billion tonnes of goods during the first nine months of 2025 a year-on-year increase of 3.4 percent.
This sustained growth in rail freight volume indicates robust industrial output and strong domestic demand. It suggests that the rail sector is effectively supporting China’s supply chains, enabling the efficient distribution of raw materials and finished products, which is vital for economic stability and growth.

The increase in freight volume reflects the ongoing investment and modernization efforts within China’s railway system, aiming to enhance capacity and efficiency. This trend is critical for maintaining the competitiveness of Chinese exports and supporting domestic economic objectives.

The positive performance of China’s rail freight sector in early 2025 positions it as a key contributor to the nation’s economic resilience and a significant factor in global logistics. Continued expansion and efficiency in this sector will be crucial for future economic development and regional connectivity.
