China's Railway Passenger Traffic Reaches Record High in First Half of 2025

BEIJING, July 2025 — China's railway network reached a new milestone in the first half of 2025, carrying a record-breaking 2.24 billion passengers, according to official data released by China State Railway Group Co., Ltd. The figure represents a 6.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024, highlighting strong demand for rail travel across the country.

On average, the national railway system operated 11,183 passenger trains each day, reflecting a 7.5% year-on-year growth in daily services. The highest single-day passenger volume occurred on May 1st—the start of the May Day holiday—when over 23 million trips were made, marking the busiest day on record for China's railways.

Foreign passenger traffic also surged significantly. Buoyed by China's relaxed visa policies, international visitors took approximately 9.15 million train trips within the country during the six months, a 30.1% jump from the previous year.

Cross-border services likewise saw notable gains. The China-Laos Railway reported 139,000 international passenger trips from January to June 2025, registering a 19.1% year-on-year increase.
China State Railway Group credited the growth to the expanding high-speed rail network, improved service capacity, and government policies promoting both domestic tourism and inbound international travel.
