China Unveils World's First Double-Decker Cable-Stayed Rail-Road Bridge
ANHUI, November 2025 — The opening of a major new infrastructure project is reshaping transportation networks in Asia. In China, the Tongling Yangtze River Third Bridge in Anhui province has officially opened, representing a significant advance in integrated transport. This bridge is the world’s first double-decker structure combining cable-stayed and suspension designs to carry both road and rail traffic.
With a main span of 988 meters and a total investment of 8.78 billion yuan, the bridge was completed six months ahead of schedule. The lower deck accommodates two rail lines (including high-speed and conventional lines), while the upper deck supports a six-lane expressway.
Strategically, this bridge plays a vital role in enhancing regional connectivity as part of national development plans like the Belt and Road Initiative, the Yangtze River Economic Belt, and the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta. Its innovative “cooperative system” combining the stiffness of a cable-stayed structure with the long-span capability of a suspension bridge allows for strong load-bearing capacity without compromising river navigation.
By linking expressways, intercity railways, and freight lines, the Tongling Third Bridge strengthens cross‑river transport capacity and supports sustainable economic development in the Yangtze River region.
