EGYPT, November 2025 — Egypt has officially launched its Velaro high-speed rail network, a significant development poised to reshape national transportation and establish the country as a major player in the global high-speed rail industry. This ambitious project, a cornerstone of Egypt's infrastructure modernization efforts, aims to connect the nation with trains capable of reaching speeds up to 155 miles per hour, promising to revolutionize travel and freight movement across the country.

The new network spans an impressive 1,242 miles, linking 60 stations and designed to enhance connectivity for approximately 90% of the population. Developed by Siemens Mobility in collaboration with local giants Arab Contractors and Orascom Construction, the Velaro trains are engineered to operate efficiently even in Egypt's extreme climate, featuring advanced cooling systems. This £8 billion investment is set to make Egypt home to the sixth-largest high-speed rail network worldwide, joining the ranks of leading nations in rail technology.

Beyond passenger transport, the Velaro project significantly bolsters Egypt's freight strategy, increasing national freight capacity by 46%. The introduction of Desiro regional trains, operating at 99mph, will further enhance logistics along the "Suez Canal on Rails" route, connecting key industrial hubs. The initiative is projected to create 40,000 direct jobs and stimulate economic growth, particularly in less developed regions, by improving accessibility and fostering new opportunities for businesses and individuals.

The implementation of the Velaro network underscores Egypt's commitment to sustainable transportation. As an electric-powered alternative to road and air travel, high-speed rail offers reduced emissions and can alleviate congestion and pollution in major urban centers like Cairo and Alexandria.
