Hitachi Rail to Modernize Kuala Lumpur's Ampang Line with Advanced Digital Solutions

KUALA LUMPUR, October 2025 —Hitachi Rail has been awarded a contract to deliver advanced digital solutions and provide long-term service support (LTSS) for Kuala Lumpur’s Ampang Line, a move that strengthens Malaysia’s ongoing urban-rail modernisation programme.

The scope of the engagement is designed to improve the Ampang Line’s reliability, safety, and operational efficiency. Key elements include the integration of multiple radio networks to enhance train-to-control communications, the deployment of advanced data analytics capabilities, and upgrades to Automatic Train Supervision (ATS) functions to support real-time performance monitoring and early detection of anomalies. These measures aim to enable faster, more proactive responses to operational issues and better day-to-day service for commuters.

A dedicated long-term service support package is included in the contract, under which Hitachi will maintain the signalling and train-control systems on the Ampang Line for the next decade. The framework emphasizes preventive maintenance and digital diagnostics to reduce costly reactive repairs and to help meet performance targets.

As part of its commitment to local capability building, Hitachi Rail will also leverage its Rail Centre of Excellence in Batu Gajah to deliver specialised training and technology transfer to Malaysian rail engineers. The company has a long track record in Malaysia, having introduced its SelTrac™ Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) solution to the Kelana Jaya LRT in the late 1990s and subsequently contributing to upgrades across Kuala Lumpur’s metro network.

Commenting on the award, Hitachi Rail highlighted the project’s role in supporting Malaysia’s digital transformation in transport and in strengthening long-term local partnerships. The Ampang Line upgrade reflects a broader industry trend across Asia toward smarter, more integrated urban transit systems investments that aim both to improve passenger experience and to support the sustainable growth of rapidly expanding cities.
