Hong Kong's MTR Offers Free Light Rail and Tram Rides for Mid-Autumn Festival

HONG KONG, October 2025 — MTR Corporation launched a special initiative to promote public transport accessibility and community engagement by offering complimentary rides on its Light Rail and tram services. The event, coinciding with the Mid-Autumn Festival, reflects the company’s commitment to enhancing the commuter experience and fostering social connectivity across the city.

The “Light Rail Ding Ding Fun” free-ride day allowed unlimited travel on both the Light Rail network and the historic “Ding Ding” trams for the entire day. The initiative was officially inaugurated by the Chief Secretary for Administration and the Managing Director of MTR Hong Kong Transport Services. The promotion marks a significant expansion of free-ride access, extending beyond the traditional Hong Kong Island tram network to include the Light Rail system, thereby reaching a broader segment of the population.

This promotional event aligns with broader government objectives for transport network enhancements, including key infrastructure projects and sustainable mobility goals. By making public transport more accessible, MTR aims to encourage increased ridership, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and contribute to the city’s sustainability targets. The initiative also serves as an example of corporate social responsibility, benefiting residents during an important cultural holiday.

In addition to passenger-service offerings, MTR engaged youth through its “Strive and Rise” programme, giving participants a behind-the-scenes look at depot operations and career opportunities in the transport sector. This holistic approach combining public service promotions with youth development highlights MTR’s multifaceted role in Hong Kong’s urban development and community building, and fits into the broader narrative of improving public-transport experience and infrastructure in the region.
