Hyderabad Metro Rail Project Accelerates Road Widening for Old City Corridor
Widening works are currently underway along the MGBS–Chandrayangutta corridor in the city's historic Old City area, an important step in expanding the metro network and improving public transportation for densely populated neighborhoods.

According to NVS Reddy, Managing Director of Hyderabad Airport Metro Limited (HAML), the corridor's development has been optimized through an engineering redesign, significantly reducing the number of affected properties from 1,100 to around 900. As of now, property acquisition awards have been issued for 412 structures, with 380 already demolished. Compensation amounting to ₹360 crore has been disbursed to property owners.
"The alignment changes have helped us minimize displacement and ensure faster progress," Reddy said, as The Hindu and Times of India reported. However, the road widening poses considerable challenges due to the tightly packed residential structures and utility lines. To avoid disrupting residents' daily lives, demolition and clearance works are mainly conducted during nighttime hours.
Preparatory work for the metro infrastructure is ongoing. Pillar locations have been identified along the corridor, and geotechnical investigations are scheduled to assess soil and structural conditions ahead of foundation construction.
In a recent review, Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed all overhead electrical lines along the corridor to be moved underground. This is part of a broader initiative to modernize infrastructure while preserving the integrity of the Old City. Coordination is currently ongoing with utility departments to manage the relocation of underground water pipelines, communication lines, and other essential services.
The MGBS–Chandrayangutta metro extension, part of the larger Phase II expansion plan, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve last-mile connectivity in the Old City, a region long overdue for metro accessibility. Authorities emphasize that the project will transform urban mobility and contribute to economic and environmental improvements across Hyderabad.
