India Aims to Become Global Rail Export Hub

India is cementing its role as a global rail manufacturing hub, with substantial export achievements driven by industrial facilities such as Alstom's Savli plant in Gujarat. The unit has emerged as a central player in India's "Make in India" and "Make for the World" ambitions, exporting a diverse range of rail components and systems to more than a dozen countries.

During a recent site visit to the Savli facility, India's Union Minister for Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, praised the facility's achievements and underscored its alignment with international manufacturing and safety standards. According to the Ministry of Railways, India has exported over 1,000 rail cars since 2016, with 450 metro cars dispatched from Savli to support the Queensland Metro project in Australia.

In addition to rail cars, the Savli plant has supplied over 3,800 bogies to global markets, including Germany, Brazil, and Egypt, and 4,000 flatpack kits to Austria. Meanwhile, the nearby Maneja facility has delivered over 5,000 propulsion systems to international clients across France, Germany, Mexico, Romania, Spain, and Italy, according to data from Alstom India and industry briefings reported by The Economic Times and Hindustan Times.

The Indian railway export footprint also includes:
• Metro coaches shipped to Australia and Canada,
• Bogies exported to the UK, Saudi Arabia, France, and Australia,
• Passenger coaches were delivered to Mozambique, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and
• Locomotives were supplied to Mozambique, Senegal, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and the Republic of Guinea.

India's expanding rail technology capabilities also include 27 ongoing international signalling projects and support for 40 more. These projects leverage high-end digital systems developed at Alstom's Digital Experience Centre in Bengaluru, utilising artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and cybersecurity technologies.

A robust domestic supply chain reinforces this growth. Companies such as Integra, Anovi, Hind Rectifier, Hitachi Energy, and ABB have provided high-quality fabrication, interior fittings, and electrical systems. Their presence around the Savli industrial cluster is helping to anchor a sustainable ecosystem that supports the export of complex rail technologies and components.

The continued growth of India's railway export sector is enhancing the country's global reputation and contributing to domestic employment, skill development, and technology transfer. Analysts view this as a vital component of India's long-term industrial policy aimed at increasing high-value manufacturing exports and reducing reliance on imports in the mobility sector.
