India's Railways Surpass 1 Billion Tonnes in Freight Loading, Boosting National Mobility

NEW DELHI, November 2025 — Indian Railways has achieved a significant milestone, surpassing 1 billion tonnes in freight loading for the current year. As of November 19, cumulative loading reached 1020 million tonnes, underscoring a robust expansion in the nation's transport efficiency and its critical role in strengthening national mobility.

The substantial freight volumes are driven by key commodities, with coal leading at 505 million tonnes, followed by iron ore at 115 million tonnes, and cement at 92 million tonnes. Container traffic also contributed significantly with 59 million tonnes. Daily freight loading has seen a healthy increase, averaging nearly 4.4 million tonnes, up from 4.2 million tonnes in the previous year, indicating sustained operational efficiency.

This surge in freight movement signifies a strengthening of India's economic infrastructure. The efficient distribution of essential materials like cement and steel supports ongoing infrastructure development, while the shift of bulk goods to rail over road enhances sustainability by reducing carbon emissions and highway congestion. This improved logistics network indirectly benefits passenger travel and tourism by easing road traffic and improving overall connectivity.

Modernization efforts, including policies for bulk cement terminals and rationalized container transport rates, are further optimizing the movement of goods. The consistent growth in freight operations positions Indian Railways as a vital engine for national development, contributing to economic output and paving the way for more seamless and environmentally conscious transportation solutions across the subcontinent.
