Indian Railways Designates Historic Mailani-Nanpara Metre Gauge Line as National Heritage Route
DUDHWA, October 2025 — The Mailani–Nanpara metre gauge railway line, a 171-kilometer stretch passing through the scenic Dudhwa National Park, has officially been recognized as a National Heritage Route by Indian Railways. The designation marks a significant milestone in preserving India’s extensive railway history and engineering legacy.
Constructed more than 130 years ago during the British colonial era, the route features 16 stations and 71 bridges, exemplifying 19th-century engineering ingenuity. Key junctions such as Mailani and Nanpara are known for their rare dual-gauge systems, enabling smooth transitions between different track types. Recent upgrades including partial integration with modern broad-gauge sections and ongoing electrification in adjoining areas illustrate a balance between heritage preservation and contemporary infrastructure development.
The heritage recognition is expected to boost sustainable tourism, attracting visitors to the Dudhwa National Park while fostering rural development and local employment opportunities. Preservation efforts aim to celebrate the cultural and historical importance of the line, offering travelers an immersive blend of heritage railway experiences and eco-tourism.
As part of these efforts, the North Eastern Railway plans to conserve traditional railway artifacts and metre-gauge diesel engines at key stations such as Mailani and Dudhwa. Heritage-style tourist trains, including a proposed AC special service between Mailani and Dudhwa, will allow passengers to experience the region’s rich rail legacy firsthand.
Despite natural challenges such as seasonal flooding near the Sharda River, the Mailani–Nanpara line endures as a testament to the resilience and historical depth of Indian Railways. Its inclusion in the national heritage list reflects a broader commitment to honoring historical infrastructure while advancing modernization and sustainable regional tourism.
