Indian Railways Enhances Winter Operations with Advanced Safety Technology and Increased Capacity

INDIA, November 2025 — Indian Railways is implementing significant upgrades to its network to enhance safety and passenger experience, particularly in anticipation of the winter season's challenges, including dense fog and increased travel demand. These initiatives underscore a commitment to modernizing rail infrastructure and services across key divisions.

The Izatnagar division has equipped 250 trains with advanced GPS-based Fog Safe Devices, enabling trains to maintain higher speeds, up to 75 km/h, even in low visibility conditions. This technology provides loco pilots with real-time signal information, boosting operational efficiency and safety. Concurrently, the Moradabad division is addressing rising passenger numbers by adding extra sleeper coaches to major routes, aiming to alleviate congestion and improve comfort during peak travel periods. Additional safety measures include reflective markings on level crossing barriers and luminous strips on signal posts.

These enhancements are poised to significantly improve the reliability and safety of train operations during adverse weather, reducing potential delays caused by fog. For passengers, the addition of more coaches means greater accessibility and comfort, contributing to a more positive travel experience during busy periods. The comprehensive approach aims to ensure seamless and secure journeys for millions of travelers.

The deployment of Fog Safe Devices is mandatory for both passenger and freight trains, reinforcing a system-wide commitment to safety. Furthermore, loco pilots and their assistants have undergone specialized training to navigate winter and foggy weather conditions, ensuring personnel are well-prepared for operational challenges.

Overall, these strategic improvements by Indian Railways reflect a forward-thinking approach to managing seasonal operational hurdles and growing passenger needs. By integrating cutting-edge technology with service expansions, the railway network is positioning itself to provide a more efficient, secure, and comfortable travel experience throughout the year.
