Indian Railways in Tripura Accused of Facilitating Narcotics Smuggling
AGARTALA, November 2025 — The integrity of India’s railway network in Tripura is under scrutiny as the Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress (TPYC) has voiced serious concerns regarding its alleged misuse for the transportation of illegal drugs and banned substances into the state. This development highlights critical challenges in maintaining the security and operational integrity of rail infrastructure.
In a letter addressed to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, TPYC president Neel Kamal Saha detailed instances where the railway system, once a symbol of progress, is reportedly being exploited as a conduit for narcotics. A specific incident cited involved the discovery of large quantities of illegal drugs and banned cough syrups in two rail wagons at Jirania Railway Station on October 15.
The TPYC has expressed deep concern over the lack of arrests following the seizure, alleging that local law enforcement may be hesitant to act against influential individuals. The organization further claims a nexus between ruling‑party leaders, merchants, and brokers, which they believe has transformed Tripura into a significant corridor for narcotics trafficking in Southeast Asia, posing a threat to the state’s peace and security.
The TPYC has urged the Railway Minister to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the potential involvement of railway officials and to ensure swift action and stringent punishment for those responsible. As of the report, there has been no official statement from the Ministry of Railways or the Tripura Police regarding these allegations, leaving the matter unresolved and raising questions about the security protocols governing the region’s rail transport.
