Indian Railways Pursues Integrated Tunnel Projects for Cost-Effective Connectivity
INDIA, October 2025 — Indian Railways is exploring the feasibility of constructing tunnels designed to accommodate both railway and vehicular traffic. This strategic initiative aims to optimize the utilization of underground space, particularly in densely populated or geographically constrained regions, thereby enhancing infrastructure development across the nation.
The plan involves investigating dual-purpose tunnel alignments during the initial planning and detailed project report stages. Proposals for these integrated projects will be submitted to a Joint Working Group (JWG), comprising representatives from both the Ministry of Railways and the Ministry of Roads, for approval.
This approach is anticipated to significantly reduce land acquisition and construction costs. By harmonizing planning, design, and operational strategies for both rail and road transport within shared corridors, the initiative seeks to optimize investment, minimize environmental impact, and avoid redundant excavation efforts, ultimately leading to more cost-effective connectivity solutions.
This forward-thinking strategy aligns with India's substantial infrastructure spending targets and emphasizes integrated planning for future development. The focus on cost-effective implementation and enhanced connectivity through shared infrastructure underscores a commitment to modernizing the nation's transport network.
