Indian Railways Slashes Bottled Water Prices Following GST Adjustments
INDIA, SEPTEMBER 2025 — Indian Railways has announced a reduction in the prices of its packaged drinking water brand, Rail Neer, as part of its effort to pass on the benefits of recent Goods and Services Tax (GST) reforms to passengers. The move underscores the organisation’s commitment to making essential items more affordable for travellers across India’s vast rail network.
Effective September 20, 2025, the maximum retail price for a 1-litre bottle of Rail Neer will decrease from ₹15 to ₹14, while the 500 ml bottle will be reduced from ₹10 to ₹9. The new pricing will also apply to other approved packaged drinking water brands sold at railway stations and onboard trains.
This adjustment aligns with the forthcoming two-tier GST structure, which takes effect on September 22, 2025, standardising most goods and services under the 5% and 18% tax brackets. By revising prices accordingly, Indian Railways ensures that passengers experience the direct benefits of reduced tax rates.
The initiative reinforces Indian Railways’ focus on passenger welfare, affordability, and responsiveness to national policy changes. By keeping essential travel commodities accessible, the organisation continues to enhance the overall journey experience and uphold its role as a people-centric transport provider.
This price revision is part of a broader strategy to align essential service costs with evolving economic conditions, ensuring travellers gain tangible benefits from fiscal reforms while promoting greater trust and satisfaction among railway passengers.
