Indonesia’s Whoosh High-Speed Rail Surpasses 10 Million Passengers Milestone
Indonesia's Whoosh high-speed train has reached a significant milestone, transporting 10,014,707 passengers across 29,786 trips between 17 October 2023 and 25 June 2025. This achievement, according to PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia-China (KCIC), underscores strong public enthusiasm and marks a new chapter in Indonesia's railway advancements. Continuous service improvements and collaborations with public transportation stakeholders have been crucial in enhancing access to Whoosh stations.
The project represents a successful transfer of knowledge and technology between Chinese and Indonesian experts, with the train's operations now fully managed by Indonesian personnel. Environmental benefits are also notable, with a University of Indonesia study indicating that Whoosh emits significantly less carbon dioxide per passenger kilometre compared to private vehicles. Furthermore, the high-speed rail has contributed to a reduction in traffic accident-related losses, estimated at Rp2.91 billion annually.
KCIC emphasises that this milestone reflects Indonesia's progress in delivering a modern, environmentally conscious, and high-standard transportation system. The Whoosh high-speed railway, which began development in 2015 and public service in October 2023, positions Indonesia as the first country in Southeast Asia and the Southern Hemisphere to operate such a system.
